Billionaire Mukesh Ambani, head of Reliance Industries, has unveiled a grand plan to make India self-reliant in the race for global artificial intelligence or AI technology. He announced that from now on, AI technology will be added to every phone call, mobile app and daily activities of the common man in India.
At Reliance’s annual general meeting in Mumbai on Friday (June 19), Mukesh Ambani unveiled a suite of cutting-edge AI services for his telecom network Jio’s nearly 500 million subscribers. The most talked about technology is ‘Jio Call Agent’. It’s basically a built-in AI assistant that can be integrated into normal phone calls.
It can type or transcribe call conversations, summarize entire conversations, and perform tasks like booking an Uber cab, ordering food, or booking a restaurant table with just a word of mouth or voice command. Saying “Hey Jio” without any separate app will activate this service.
Apart from this, Mukesh Ambani has brought a smart home display device called ‘Jio Teleframe’. It will automatically display the weather forecast, family member’s work schedule and various emergency notifications on the screen while at home. On the other hand, the ‘MyJio’ app is also fully AI driven, so that users can do things like activate e-SIM or choose roaming plan just by speaking in plain language.
Mukesh Ambani, 69, emphasized at the meeting, “India will not be just a buyer of AI technology developed by other countries. India must be an innovator, user and global leader of AI technology.” To meet this goal, Reliance has already tied up with global tech giants like Google, Meta and Nvidia and announced plans to invest US$1,000 crore (110 billion) to build its own AI infrastructure in India.
Reliance has also launched some special services capable of working in 22 local Indian languages for the convenience of common people. These include ‘GeoHealthIQ’ for the health sector, ‘GeoLearnIQ’ for education, ‘GeoAgriIQ’ for agriculture and ‘AI Matters’ for small businesses.
At the same time, Ambani gave a big news for investors in the business sector. He said, the Board of Directors of Jio Platform has approved a draft proposal to issue 27 crore new shares for Jio’s much awaited initial public offering or IPO in the capital market. With Reliance’s share price down nearly 17 percent this year, Mukesh Ambani is betting big on this AI-driven new business model to revive the company’s growth and make Jio’s IPO attractive.
