He said these things while addressing the chief guest at the opening ceremony of the two-day seminar titled ‘Progress of research programs and knowledge gained by fellows of Science and Technology Fellowship Trust’ organized at the Multipurpose Hall of National Science and Technology Complex at Agargaon in the capital yesterday.

Referring to artificial intelligence (AI), he said, ‘AI can give advice, but cannot make decisions. People decide. And that human resource is in Bangladesh.

Emphasizing the link between research and the market, he said, ‘The biggest challenge now is to connect the results of research with the improvement of the quality of life of the common people and economic growth. Research should not be limited to publication, it should be made commercially viable and applicable.’

He told the researchers, ‘In the beginning of the research, there should be a plan for its practical application, potential impact and the next step. The ministry should be informed about the kind of support required to reach the market of the research results.

Referring to the need for export diversification, the secretary said, ‘At present, about 85 percent of the country’s export income is dependent on the ready-made garment sector. Emphasis should be placed on research and innovation to bring other promising products to a competitive position in the global market by raising international standards.’
