Apple CEO Tim Cook has indicated that the price of Apple products may increase in the future due to the acute shortage of memory chips and storage components around the world.
In an interview given to the US-based media The Wall Street Journal, he said, ‘Unfortunately, the price increase is no longer possible to avoid. We are trying to reduce costs and protect customers from stress as much as possible, but the situation is no longer sustainable.’
He said that due to the rapid increase in demand worldwide in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, additional pressure has been created on the memory and storage components. This has led to supply shortages and increased prices.
Tim Cook added, ‘At the same time demand is high and supply is relatively low. Memory manufacturers are pushing big price hikes. In this situation, it is difficult to keep the price of consumer devices stable for a long time.
He also mentioned that he has not seen such a crisis in the technology industry in the last 40 years.
According to analysts, the price of the new iPhone, MacBook and iPad series may increase in the future. Especially the upcoming iPhone 18 series is expected to have the greatest impact. Not only Apple, several technology companies including Samsung, Microsoft, HP, Nintendo, Valve are also under similar price pressure.
Why are prices rising?
According to analysts, there are several main factors behind the rise in the price of technology products
First, the explosive demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technology around the world. Data centers, AI servers, and high-performance computing require large amounts of RAM and storage.
Second, limited supply in the manufacturing sector. Although some of the major memory chip companies are increasing production, they are unable to keep up with demand.
Third, increase in raw material and production costs. Advanced technology increases the cost of chip manufacturing which ultimately affects the retail market.
Fourth, volatility in global supply chains. Pressures from international trade and transport systems are also contributing to price increases.
All in all, the ‘RAM and storage crunch’ is currently emerging as a major challenge in the tech industry, which may have a direct impact on consumer-level product prices in the coming days.
