Qualcomm may bring a new surprise to the flagship smartphone processor market. According to various sources, the company is testing two versions of its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset. One of these will be the standard version, which will have LPDDR5X memory support. The higher-end ‘Pro’ version, on the other hand, may use faster LPDDR6 memory.

According to the leaked information, the core clock speed of the two versions will be the same, but the main difference will be in the memory technology and storage capacity. The Pro version may have LPDDR6 RAM as well as UFS 5.0 storage support, which will further improve data transfer speed and overall performance.

According to analysts, this chipset is being developed for premium ‘Ultra’ flagship smartphones that will hit the market in 2027. It could be the world’s first Android SoC (System on Chip) built on 2 nanometer technology. The chip will be manufactured using TSMC’s state-of-the-art 2 nanometer manufacturing process, which will ensure higher performance and improved power savings than previous generations.

But the price of this chipset with the latest technology can be quite high. Rumor has it that smartphone makers may have to spend more than $300 for each unit of the Pro version. That is why Qualcomm is believed to have taken the strategy of bringing two different versions to the market. This will allow brands to use the LPDDR5X version for relatively low-cost flagship phones, while also opting for the LPDDR6 version for maximum bandwidth and advanced on-device artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

According to the initial block diagram, the chipset will have powerful multi-core processing capabilities and advanced GPU. The Pro version is rumored to use the next generation Adreno 850 graphics processor. Also, a 7-core CPU version may be introduced later for devices in different price ranges.

Experts feel that this dual version strategy of Qualcomm could be quite effective considering the reality of rising production costs of premium smartphones. On the one hand, there will be a ‘Pro’ version for users who want the highest performance, while on the other hand, the standard version will offer almost the same flagship experience at a relatively low price.

Although Qualcomm has not yet officially released any information, more details may be known later this year. If the rumors are true, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro could set a new benchmark for next-generation high-end Android smartphones.
