The cabinet has given final approval subject to vetting of the draft ‘Anti-Gambling Act, 2026’ to protect public order, reduce crime and prevent socio-economic and psychological damage.
This approval was given in the tenth meeting of the Cabinet at Sangsad Bhavan on Thursday (June 18) night, according to the press release of the Cabinet Department.
Prime Minister Tariq Rahman presided over the cabinet meeting.
According to the press release of the cabinet department, with the change of time, various types of online and offline gambling activities are expanding due to the introduction of modern technology in the spread of gambling. As a result, in order to protect public order, reduce crime, and prevent socio-economic and psychological damage, by taking advantage of contemporary advanced technology on these gambling activities and providing proper supervision and legal framework, “The Public Gambling Act, 1867” has been updated and modernized through the necessary amendments to protect the overall moral and economic balance of the state.
The proposed draft law defines various aspects of gambling, including gambling, gambling venues, gambling materials, digital assets, digital gambling platforms, digital wallets, totalizers, online and remote gambling, betting or betting, bettors, match fixing or spot fixing.
Different types of punishments (fine, imprisonment and both) are prescribed depending on the nature of the offence.
