Using Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology ‘Grok’ in the ongoing war against Iran led by the United States and Israel, the US forces dropped weapons on more than 2,000 targets in just 96 hours.
This sensational information was revealed from a written testimony of Cameron Stanley, head of digital and artificial intelligence of the US Department of Defense (Pentagon). This is the first time an official of the Trump administration has directly acknowledged the use of AI technology in the war against Iran.
Pentagon official Cameron Stanley submitted the written declaration as part of the Trump administration’s intervention in an ongoing civil case between the environmental group NAACP and Musk’s company XAI in the Northern District Court of Mississippi. There, he noted, the US government uses the ‘Groc Gov Model’, which is largely based on the commercial version of the XAI. It is part of the Pentagon’s ‘Maven Smart Systems’ (MSS) supporting critical national security missions such as targeting, intelligence gathering, military readiness and recruitment processes.
According to information provided by Stanley, during ‘Operation Epic Fury’, the US forces were able to deploy 2,000 weapons in just four days through the operation of these Maven Smart Systems. However, it is not specified exactly when this technology was used. As a result, it is not clear whether this technology had any direct connection with the incident in which 156 civilians, including 120 school students, were killed in the US attack on the first day of the war on February 28.
According to Iran’s ‘Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans’, about 3,500 Iranian citizens have been killed in the US-Israeli attack since February 28.
The Pentagon’s admission came in response to an environmental lawsuit originally filed against XAI. On April 26, the NAACP filed a case against XAI and its affiliates for violating environmental laws. They allege that 27 methane gas turbines are operating illegally in Southhaven, Mississippi to power the ‘Colossus 2’ supercomputer data center in Memphis, Tennessee. The toxic nitrogen oxides emitted from these turbines are seriously endangering the health of the black community in the area. Through the lawsuit, the company has demanded closure of the illegal turbines and monetary penalty on XAI.
However, the Trump administration is strongly opposed to this case. Pentagon official Cameron Stanley argued in court that the US military’s ability to protect national security and stay technologically ahead of adversaries would be severely impaired if the Colossus 2 data center was disrupted or shut down due to the Southhaven power outage. He called for data centers in the modern battlefield to be considered strategic tools as important as military arsenals rather than just commercial infrastructure.
In a similar vein, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) has also urged the court to dismiss the case in the interest of national security. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Adam Gustafson of the Department of Justice’s Environment and Natural Resources Division made it clear that the US government will not tolerate any private company using environmental laws to endanger the nation’s national security.
