Mobile phones are an integral part of our lives. From morning to night we talk on the phone for various needs. The special thing is, whether the person on the other end is next to us or thousands of kilometers away, what we say reaches him almost at the same time. But have you ever thought, how the words on the phone reach the other end so quickly? Behind this entire process is advanced technology.
When you talk on the phone, the mobile phone’s microphone first picks up your voice. It converts sound waves into electrical signals. The phone’s microchip converts that electrical signal into binary codes (0s and 1s) that a computer can understand. During this process the conversation is cleared by reducing unnecessary background noise.
The information converted into binary code is sent from the mobile antenna to the nearest mobile tower via radio waves. This signal travels at speeds close to the speed of light. The mobile tower receives that signal and sends it to the base station. The base station manages the entire network and determines where the call will be routed.
If the call is to another mobile in the same network, the base station sends the signal directly to the corresponding tower. But the process gets a bit complicated if the call is to another network or landline. The voice data then travels via fiber optic cable or satellite to the switching station, which is called the brain of the mobile network.
The switching station first finds out where the receiver is currently located. The data is then sent to its nearest mobile tower. That tower broadcasts the signal through radio waves. The receiver receives the mobile phone signal and converts it back into an electrical signal. Finally, the phone’s speaker converts that signal into sound so the person on the other end hears your voice.
The most amazing thing is, this whole process happens so fast that we don’t feel any lag. From microphones to fiber optic networks and switching stations, this journey is completed in an instant. And that’s why today we can easily communicate with people in any part of the world.
