A huge international fraud ring has been found to have siphoned billions of dollars from around the world by misusing artificial intelligence or AI technology. Tech giant Google has sued a Chinese cybercriminal gang in a US court for allegedly running this scam using its own AI model ‘Gemini’. Google announced this legal action in a notification last Friday.

Google is working together with the US intelligence agency FBI and the top three US mobile operators — AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon — to eliminate this international ring. Delaine Prado, Google’s general counsel, said, “This concerted effort and litigation is clear to see how widespread this fraud has been around the world.”

As the leaves were traps
In the lawsuit filed in court, Google accused an underground criminal organization in China called ‘Outsider Enterprise’. The gang was running the scam using Google’s technology and brand name. Google has asked the court for an emergency injunction to completely shut down the network.

The investigation revealed that the hackers used Gemini AI to create highly accurate and believable text and fake websites of Google, YouTube, the US Postal Service and New York’s toll service ‘e-Zpass’. However, Google has not revealed for strategic reasons how the hackers did this fraud by breaking Gemini’s security wall.

Millions of victims in two weeks
According to Google, this single scam operation has already defrauded hundreds of thousands of people and the financial losses have exceeded millions of dollars. Below are some pictures of the horrors of this criminal gang:

9,000 Fake Websites: They created more than 9,000 fake websites and more than 10 million fraudulent URLs by avoiding Google’s eyes.

2.5 million malicious messages: In just two weeks, they sent more than 2.5 million malicious linked messages.

55,000 spam flags: Android users’ spam protection systems have flagged at least 55,000 text messages sent by this gang as ‘dangerous spam’.

New Law Proposed to Prevent AI Scams
Google warned that the incident demonstrates how powerful AI has become for criminals. Google is actively lobbying the US Congress to pass at least 7 new laws with bipartisan support to prevent such crimes. Among these are the ‘National Strategy for Combating Scams Act’ and the ‘Stop Scams Against Seniors Act’ for the protection of senior citizens.

US Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania supported this action, saying it is a well-organized international crime spread by phone. The immune system also needs to be aggressive to prevent it. FBI Assistant Director Brett Leatherman added that criminals are turning to AI to make fraud more realistic. A permanent international legal solution is needed to suppress them.
